Welcome to Spanish Football News,the website dedicated to news from the Spanish Primera División, also known as La Liga.  The quality of the football in the Spanish top division is quite possibly unparalleled in the world today; it’s faster and more exciting than the tedious Italian league and more skilful than the English Premier League or the Bundesliga.

The league has historically been dominated by two teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the story of their rivalry is as interesting as any dreamt-up fiction; on opposing sides in the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona became a rallying point for anti-monarchist and anti-Franco supporters while Real Madrid was a standard bearer for the Francisco Franco’s allies.  Tensions of course remain high when the sides play each other but other areas also have their axe to grind with Madrid, notably Athletic Bilbao in the Basque country.

There are a number of other successful teams in the league though and the league title has been shared around sides such as Valencia, Real Betis and Athletic Bilbao although Barcelona are the current undisputed champions, having won the last three titles along with the two out of three recent Champions League titles.

The strength of Spanish football, especially that of the top two teams, has ensured Spanish national football is currently the strongest in the world having won the 2008 UEFA European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Players such as David Villa, Cesc Frabregas and Xabi Alonso have formed the backbone of the national side and the similarity in the style of play between club and country has proved a winning combination.
